Fifty Years and Eight Minutes

Watching news stories that could be from 50 years ago.

Calls for white people to remake ourselves will not succeed any better now than they did 50 years ago. The need to belittle others, abuse them, and brutalize them, seems to be built into human beings. The fact that it seems to be a universal impulse, borne out among cultures around the world, does not excuse the actions of white people in this country. The protesters are right to protest.

I listen to Yvette Carnell and sometimes to Antonio Moore, and I think their calls for a united political front among the American descendants of slavery is the right approach, because God knows – You know very well – that our nature will not be changed, until that moment comes, that blink of an eye. Not before then. In the meantime, raw political counterpressure is what will make life better for oppressed people.

I’m glad younger people, including younger Christians, are full of fire and certitude. Their dedication and passion for justice are needed. My discouragement does me no credit.

How do You not bow Your head in shame? Why do You not correct Your creature so that he is no longer capable of kneeling on another man’s neck for 8 minutes until that man goes limp and dies?
